The #1 thinking is “Is it really necessary to use your expensive DSLR at the construction site ?

The purchase cost or rental cost is one thing. What really matters is the DSLR complicated camera setups, settings for time lapse video and it also difficult to ask the job site workers to take over. So you may foot the service company bills monthly or try to train your job site people to operate the DSLR.

Learned about the limited Shutter life of DSLR? It seems that the average statistic shutter life is around 100,000 shots. 100k shots is probably a big number for ordinary photo shots but it can be “toasted” so easily by the time lapse mode. Here is a good example: taking photos every 1 min then 1×60 min x24 hrs=1,440 shots per Day, Your DSLR will just burst in 69.44 days (100,000 divided by 1,440) which is only TWO Months!

My advice is

Try not to use DSLR for Construction camera recording. It’s too expensive to pay the service companies , too hard for the job site workers to use and the DSLR life is Two months only.

Lesson learned: Will you use your F-22 ( unit cost: USD 150M) to fight against the terrorists who carry AK 47?

2nd thinking: Is there any other inexpensive and easy to use solutions for the Construction job site workers?

There are some rugged and Point of View cameras like GoPro or Brinno to be a easier ways for the construction sites. These POVs are all features like

• Wide angel lens (>120 degrees, Field of View)
• Default external DC power input ( ensure long term shooting)

This is a great product. I’ve always wanted to do time lapse, but never wanted to get into all the mechanics of it. Who wants to tie up an expensive camera and risk it getting damaged or “permanently relocated?” Brinno makes time lapse stupid easy. It is almost a miracle in the palm of your hand. I read the manual, set up the camera and did a great first video of carpet being installed in my game room. Here’s all it takes: Position the camera, select the capture interval, turn the camera on, record the event, turn it off, let the Brinno do its thing (image processing), pop out the flash card, slip it in the computer. iPhoto loads it — BOOM! You’ve got a time lapse movie. It saves as an AVI, but when you load it into quick time (as in play it in quick time) it automatically gets converted into a .mov. It’s that easy. No assembling in post (as with the GOPRO unit). Seriously, this thing makes time lapse as easy as taking a snap shot. Image quality is very good. Size is shockingly small — in the palm of your hand. Light weight. I was even pleased with the packaging — rivals that of apple products. This is truly a user friendly device. Buy it and enjoy it.

How does Brinno BCC100 Construction camera work with Eye Fi Pro X2

It’s been a de facto standard to hire a Construction camera service company( or rental company) to set up DSLR cameras, WiFi and record the construction job site daily images, perhaps a remote monitoring and Cloud storage if affordable. It has never been in expensive when it comes to “service”.

I’m personally preferring a much more “less luxury “way in documenting related construction site videos and images.

One of the “DIY” or “amateur” styles is Brinno Construction camera . it’s superb in low light, long term battery life and most importantly it can be merely setup and operated by the jobsite civil engineers or workers with hard hat on.

How to take better night shots by HDR video camera?

3 Tips for better night shots on Point and Shoot camera

1. Larger Apeture ( (f-stops): f1.4 DOUBLES the light tan f2.0

2. Slower Shutter speed : ( 1/125 sec is faster than 1/60 sec)

Longer shutter speeds will bring in more light.  But chances are if you’re recording out field at night time, there’s barely no light.  What may happen is the sensor on your camera will have the Benchmark it needs in the aperture settings to have the enough exposure to be well developed.

3. Fiddling the ISO ( The bigger the ISO, More Gains  you gets)

It’s controversial.  Ordinary Point and Shoot cameras don’t often have the same noise reduction capabilities of their larger brethren (although they are constantly evolving) and this makes for some fairly grainy shots past ISO400.  Some people like this, some don’t

Furthermore, One of the biggest challenges of night shots is the mix of the dark and point lights ( e.g. Street lamps, car head lights).  It will be really difficult even for the DSLRs to handles the situations like this.  Two choices here: Post Processing or HDR.

 

Post Processing:

Thanks to the rapid development of the Software and hardware rendering and animation technologies adopted by Hollywood film pioneers. The Post processing fulfilled by both software and hardware has been a pretty effective approach. The only problem is the money and time required ( sounds CRAP…I know)

HDR:

High dynamic range had no doubts been widely supported by Surveillance camera manufactures ( Home security industry) till the big boom of the smart phone business just now. The mobile phone camera has the biggest boost for the fast deployment of the HDR cameras worldwide. Everything looks cool except for the Mega Pixels war on the smartphone. HTC was remembered to be the 1st major phone camera company to fight against this crazy higher resolutions competition by adopting the more reasonable way of ” UltraPixel”–Pixel “size” matters,  not just only the number of Pixel.
